Current mood swing -: sleepy

Well, Brian's job search is still on. He got hired at a place today. Not a fantastic job, but we figured it could be a temp thing.. because most of the other places aren't hiring till after the holidays. Anyhow, he told the man he'd think about it, and when he got home, he went to call him. Well, just after he left the store, the man had a death in the family, and left, and will gone for a couple of weeks.

I want to laugh at the irony of it all, but I don't feel right doing it because someone died in his family. :(

We watched March of the Penguins tonight, and boy does that ever stir up alot of emotions. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, but i've decided that I liked it. I did find that it left me needing to know more about some things, but most of it was covered.

I was reading Boing Boing last night, and found this post about cool science projects, and it linked to Gonzo Gizmos on Amazon, and I ordered it for Dillon (My 13 year old). Dillon is very much a science guy, and he's also very hands on.. Likes to tear things apart and see how they work. This book has alot of cool projects in it, including the gauss riffle. Bri and I are looking forward to doing the stuff with him.

Anyhow, while I was there, I saw this zine by Boing Boing guy, Mark Frauenfelder, called Make. Amazon has it listed as by Mark, but I don't see anything about him anywhere on the "Make" website, so now i'm not really sure. I ordered the first year set, but when I ordered it yesterday, it was 37.76, and now it is 59.99. It said that I was pre-ordering it yesterday and now the message has all changed, and says something about how they might not be able to get it. My order status still says that I got it for 37.76, so I hope i'm still getting it and for that price, because there's no way I can afford the new price.

It's a pricey zine, but it says "If you like to tear things apart.." Well, that's Dillon. This is much more advanced than the other book, but I know that Brian will want to do some of these things, and Dillon can do it with him. If we like the mags, we're planning to get a subscription. I have some old electronics sitting around here, including an ancient 350 MHZ computer, and this is supposed to tell you how to build new things out of your old things. As well as hacking a lot of other things. Like avoiding the broadcast flag.. etc. etc.

I also ordered another Belly Dance instruction by Shamira. I'm looking forward to getting that!

Not a whole lot going on here. I went to the Chiropractor today. I guess that's bout it!

Douglas Rushkoff has posted his Fifth excerpt from his up and coming book The Ben and Jerry's syndrome. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. As one poster responded in Rushkoff's blog, everything has a good side and a bad side, and sure... Ice cream makes you fat. It's also highly enjoyable.

Though, i think that first poster missed the point of the excerpt. He focused on whether or not Ben and Jerry's was actually doing the country a service by treating it's employees well, and buying organic milks, when it makes you fat. But, I think the point was.. Ben and Jerry got taken over. They did so much good stuff, that they could no longer sustain a profit, and then when the take over happened, they stayed a separate entity, instead of trying to change the conglomerate form the inside out. Which would seem an impossible feet to me.

Maybe that was the point.. We don't try what appears to be impossible.

I'm not sure I get the point on this one actually.. *laughs* I was right there with him on all the previous excerpts.

The Grand Canyon, behind a fence

December 3rd, 2005 (02:07 pm)

Tower comparison Last weekend, on the day after Thanksgiving, Brian ([info]plutarck) and I decided to take a drive out to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. I learned about it when the Snopes feed came through my LJ, and many of the people there were complaining about how they were marring up the beautiful scenery with this thing. I argued that this was done by the Hualapai Nation tribe, and that I was sure it would be done in as much of a non-intrusive manner as possible, and they would respect the environment.

The sky-walk is supposed to be finished early in 2006, and so we expected to find it near completion. We were hoping to get some photos of a work in progress. Brian and I were both very excited to see it, and this was going to be a great outing for us. The Skywalk is at Grand Canyon West, and up until now, I didn't even know that you could access the canyon from this close to our home. It only took us about 2 and a half hours or so to get out there.

A war on Christmas?

December 3rd, 2005 (06:11 pm)

Don Surber wrote, No Virginia, there is no war on Christmas. about John Gibson's book.

Apparently several Fun-dies are calling for boycotts of stores that call it "Holiday shopping" or "Holiday decorations" or "Holiday trees" instead of "Christmas shopping, decorations, and trees."

Here we go again, do your religion my way, or else... Burn in Hell!! And go broke, and be boycotted, and die a miserable death at your "Holiday" time - heathen.

Do they not know that the concept of a tree at Christmas was a Pagan tradition? Do they not know that there is no distinct birthdate for Christ, and do they not know that this season was a Pagan thing. The Sun God is born on the Winter solstice (December 21st). Celebrating the birth of the Christian God at that time was merely a sensible thing to do at the time.

There are other religions that celebrate a gift giving season at this time of the year as well. Do we all have to call it Christmas?

I know.. let's wage a war!

P.S. Look at what I just found on Dean's World. Apparently Fox news was selling "Holiday ornaments" and they were boycotted by the Fun-dies, and have now changed their wording to Christmas ornaments.

Boy, I wish I had enough pull to call for a boycott of them until they change it back!

Anyone wanna?

December 3rd, 2005 (08:02 pm)

I would like to start a real "Blog". One with very very minimal personal stuff, but has thoughts, ideas, links etc. on Teckie, geeky stuff, pop culture, politics, entertainment, etc. etc. We'd have to pick one common "theme" or what we'll base the blog on, but can run with it from there (It could just be something along the lines of the thoughts of a bunch of women). It's best to have several partners when blogging, so you don't feel pressured to be online and be blogging every day. If you're not there, someone else can be posting and keeping it going.

We -could- do it in LJ, but I almost think I'd rather go with somewhere where we can have AdWords and advertisements, and stuff. I have NO idea which blogger is the best, or anything about the technical stuff of it all.. I just like to write, and you wouldn't have to worry about me pulling my weight. I also don't know how we'd handle the revenue gathered from the adds, but we could put our heads together and make something work.

Who's up for it?
